In Microsoft Word, a style is a set of formatting characteristics that you can apply to text, tables, and lists in your document to quickly change their appearance. When you apply a style, you apply a whole group of formats in one simple task.
For example, instead of taking three separate steps to format your title as 16 pt, Arial, and center-aligned, you can achieve the same result in one step by applying the Title style.
Working with Styles:
- Open MS Word
- Select the text on this page starting at Working with Styles and ending after the sentence Second important thing
- Copy the selected text (Edit, Copy)
- Paste it into MS Word. Save the document as wdstyles1.doc
- Make sure you create a header with your name in it (View, header and footer)
- Use Styles (look on formatting menu bar for box with Normal. If you don't see Normal, right click at the top of the screen in the grey area and make sure a check mark is by Formatting)
- Click downpointing arrow next to Normal to choose MORE. . .
- On right of screen a pane entitled styles & formatting will appear; click on downpointing arrow on the bottom next to Show:
- Choose all styles
- Click anywhere in each line of text to be edited and choose from the styles list on the right the correct style from the directions in the parenthesis.
- When you are finished editing the text, delete these directions above the line and the words after each line of text (in other words, the words in parenthesis)
- Save the edited document again and print it.
